Saline solution combines sodium chloride and water at a concentration of 9 grams of salt per liter (a 0.9% solution). They are parenteral solutions containing various concentrations of sodium chloride in water for injection, intended for intravenous administration. When administered intravenously, these solutions provide a source of water and electrolytes.
